*Oakrose jumps a little bit at Ashnel's approaching. How long has he been there?!? I never even heard him approaching. Well, best fess up... even if only a bit. She looks up with watery eyes and smiles at the dark squirrel.* Yeah. I'm... okay. *She bites her lip, then smiles and laughs a bit.* Do you... do you like Mayyie? She said you looked "rather flustered, and, Oakie, he called me Ms. Mayyie! Not Sir Darron, Ms. Oakrose, Ms. Soilrose, Ms. Mayyie, just Ms. Mayyie! Do you think... I thought he was married?" *The squirrel tries her best impression of her cousin.*

*Ashnel gives a faint laugh, but raises his paws slightly as though surrendering or telling the other squirrel to stay back.* I - I just... formalities. I'd only just been introduced, after all. Besides, Soilrose is too motherly to be addressed formally and I bet you'd laugh. Seriously, bet 5 crystal shards you'd laugh at me, Oakrose. *Ashnel laughs again himself and shakes his head to show he is joking before growing serious.* And, if anybeast is asking, then, yes; I was married. Still am, I s'ppose. *He shruggs and pulls a face as though to convince Oakrose it's nothing important.*

*Oakrose laughs.* Yes, I prob'ly would laugh. *Upon the topic of the mole, her voice grows softer and a bit more serious.* Soilrose is only a few years older than me, you know that? She's so motherly because when she was little, her mother was trying to raise 16 kids alone. *An image of Darron comes to mind at her next few sentences.* Her father... her father had left to found a mole society. But he stumbled across Moledeep instead. So her mum had to send a few of them to Redwall. Three older ones and six younger ones came with her. So she had to help raise them. Then she had some good days with DAB, but she became a motherly figure as a leader there after a while. *Oakrose stares at her wooden slippers for a few minutes. When she finally looks up, her eyes look a bit puzzled and concerned.* Well, who are you married to? Not Terri, I know it's not her. What... no, that's too personal, too deep a question.

Someone amazing, *Ashnel replies simply after a while, smiling towards the ceiling of stars. "Your smile is a pleasant change from before, when you thought that you couldn't taker anymore."* And... and I haven't seen her in a while. *His smile begins to fade, first in his eyes, then at the corners of his mouth. And perhaps it is the starlight overhead, or maybe the squirrel's eyes shine and for a full second brim with tears. Or maybe it is the imagination, because an instant later, he blinks and smiles down at his paws, resting on his knees. With a deep breath, Ashnel faces Oakrose again and his voice is a half-laugh and a note of sorrow.* It's not the deep questions that are ever a problem, Oakrose. It's the unanswered ones. Could bring down a nation. It could, I s'ppose, *He adds slowly and with deadly seriousness.* Even bring me down. Just supposing, *Ashnel reminds her. And with this, he looks up at the stars again, happy probably to let the silence wash over them or for Oakrose to speak again.*

*Oakrose never thought she'd see Ashnel look so... sad. She knew there was nothing that he could do about it, that it wasn't all his fault. She knew that if it was his fault, he didn't ever want it to turn out the way it did. She looked down at her feet again, then up at the stars.* Maybe she's looking up at those same stars, wishing she was back here in your arms, or at least thinking of you.

*Ashnel nods, pulling a slight face again.* But, what about you? *He asks suddenly, frowning.* Are you alright now? Terragon and... *Ashnel shakes his head suddenly with an almost amused expression as though to say he won't speak anymore. It's unusual of him to have even made the effort to communicate for so long with somebeast other than Regen or Terragon. Talking to Lonas when he was sombre was... different. He vaguely remembers the other talking about religion of some sort. Said the Earth was round. It'd be nice if it was, I suppose. Sort of, never-ending... 'cept nothing truly lasts forever. He could leave tommorrow and not look back. Terralux isn't the only place on Earth and like in the Pine Woods, he's finally found he's no longer comfortable with the silence. Not yet. Not tommorrow. Or maybe...*

*Oakrose nods hesitantly. Weaving her fingers in and out of an ivy vine on a tree, she responds in a quiet voice.* Yeah, I'm okay now. It's not that bad after a while. *Not as bad as it was at first.*

*Ashnel, who's attention had turned back to the night sky, glances back sharply.* Are you sure? *He asks, suddenly wondering why he didn't let Terragon speak to Oakrose instead.* Because, I dunno, maybe some other creatures wouldn't be alright by now, *He says awkwardly.*

*Crap. I've boxed myself in now. He knows I'm wearing black and he's prob'ly wondering why. She Looks up at him and sighs.* What do you mean by that? I'm not wearing black because of Lonas, if that's what you're thinking. My parents got killed when they were travelling back from here, and it seems like everyone that visits me gets hurt, somehow, someway.
*Darron was beginning to get worried. What in Hellgates is that squirrel doin' with Rose? He excused himself from the treehouse and follwed the trail of disturbed leaves. As he walked into the clearing, he saw the two talking.* Rose? It's been a while since you left. What's up? *She whirled around suddenly.* I just needed to think, that's all.

*Ashnel opens his mouth to reply, but turns and, seeing Darron, nods to the other and stands. He walks away, not looking back, turned back giving away nothing. You think I don't know? An inward voice yelps. You think it doesn't eat away, guilt and bad memories? Why do you think I find it hard to stay here? Get too attached to anything, anybeast, and it's too easy to lose it. And out loud, Ashnel says nothing.*
