Balder, stop being so bashful. *Engel sweeps into the grotto, a few sheets of parchment under her arm.* You have a perfectly good family tree. There's no reason for it not to be on-record.
I don't even go by that name anymore, never mind it's unseemly for exiles to be waving their pedigree about, *He growls in frustration, dogging her heels.* I don't even know why I told you all of that --
I seem to remember it having something to do with ale, *She replies with a too-sweet smile.* Anyway, this is nothing groundbreaking. I'd do it myself if I new the names of anyone but my father, mother, and grandfather.
*Balder scowls, but says nothing, waiting at the entrance of the grotto as Engel stops in front of Geordie and presents the several neatly-written papers.* Here you are. I hope these pass inspection.
The Genealogy of House Gerolf
Compiled by Anna Engeltrud, Archivist of Terralux; former archivist of the Northern Duke, Lord Bartram Gerolf
(Semi-mythical) Progenitor: Jalar Silfr, called Gerolf, son of Jarn the hero and Tunglskin the Moon-Vixen (as told in the Song of Jarn and referenced in the Jalar Cycle). Jalar is said to have been a dark gray fox the size of a small wolf, hence the moniker Gerolf, “gray wolf,” though the term gray refers to age and the cunning wisdom that implies, rather than coloration.
Chief Tveggi Gerolf – counted among the Five Brothers of legend, son of King Sinir Gerolf by Alof the Seeress. He was the twin to Chiefess Eydis, who was counted among the brothers as, although she was a vixen, she carried a spear and shield and led beasts into war. Tveggi and Eydis were known in some circles as Rodull and Tungulskin, the names given to Lord Sun and Lady Moon in the old stories, so close and yet different were they. Their younger half-brothers (who, with them, completed the Five) by Ragna the Chiefess were Sverri, Olver, and Fleinn. They had another, younger sister by the same mother, who also grew up to be a seeress, named Disaelf. Tveggi died in battle with a wolverine on the northern border.
Ormhildr Draugr – Shield-sister to Eydis, orphaned at birth and raised by Ragna the Chiefess. Wife of Tveggi Gerolf, and mother of Audhelga, Edla, Bausi, Gerdr, and Loptr. Died of old age.
Loptr Gerolf – Second son and youngest child of Tveggi Gerolf and Ormhildr Draugr. Left his father’s house barely into adulthood and took to the woods to the south, adopting a life of petty thievery and trickery. Partner to Rakel, who bore him a male kit. They traveled north just long enough to leave it at the doorstep of his father’s house, then disappeared once more. Presumed dead, of old age if not misfortune.
Rakel – Backwoods vixen from south of the Gerolf lands, daughter to Fuchs Rotebrush and Zankie. Mother of Bartram Gerolf. Presumed dead.
Ageirr Isrev and Laufreia Silva Isrev – parents to Kelda and Tandy Isrev, farmers of little repute. Ageirr died of illness, and Laufreia some years later of old age.
Lord Bartram Gerolf – son of Loptr Gerolf and Rakel, raised in the house of his grandfather Tveggi Gerolf by his grandmother Ormildr and great-aunt Eydis. First a warlord, and later Northern Duke of the Waldland. Died in the coup of his castle by General Reichzahn
Tandy Isrev Gerolf – First wife of Bartram Gerolf, mother of Balder Gerolf (1), died in childbirth at the age of 24.
Balder Gerolf (1) – Son of Bartram Gerolf and Tandy Isrev, died at the age of 5 of illness.
Kelda Isrev – Twin sister to Tandy Isrev, mercenary spearmaiden.
Adler and Falke Brise: A married pair of notoriously skilled mercenary scouts, parents to one known child, Egon Brise. Whereabouts unknown, presumed dead.
Egon Brise: son of Alder and Falke Brise, entrusted to mercenary-turned-farmer Felix Meine. Egon managed to marry far above his station, wedding Silke Klugheit. In a very controversial move, he took his wife’s family name for his own, inheriting his father-in-law’s governorship. Submitted willingly to the conquest of Warlord Bartram Gerolf. Whereabouts unknown in the wake of the coup.
Vinzenz Klugheit: Son of Werner and Zella Klugheit, brother to Fritz. Regional governor in the Waldland.
Ingrid Braun: Daughter of Klaus and Katje Braun, parents of relatively common origin. Mother of Silke and Kayetan.
Silke Klugheit: Daughter of Vinzenz Klugheit and Ingrid Braun Klugheit, wife of Egon, mother of Sonje, Gertrude, and Valeska. Whereabouts unknown in the wake of the coup.
Lady Sonje Klugheit Gerolf – Daughter of Egon Brise and Silke Klugheit. Second wife of Lord Bartram Gerolf, mother of Tandy and
Balder Gerolf, killed by corsairs while sailing south with an envoy.
Tandy Gerolf Morris – Elder sister to Balder (2), wife of the Western Duke, Lord Adelaide Morris
Balder Gerolf (2) – Younger brother to Tandy, itinerant healer
